My car starts fine when it is warm out but since it's gotten colder my car will not start. I have bought numerous parts for it and it still won't start. If I go out with a hair dryer or a torch and heat it up under the hood it will start after about 10 or 15 mins of warming up the box under the hood. I have tried crank sensors and everything but nothing will help. Any suggestions???????
It may be a little late but this is for the people that still continue to face this problem like I did for years with no resolution. NOBODY would ever post what fixed their problem. My car, oldsmobile alero, had a no start in cold weather the past two winters. It would turn over but not start in temps below 35-36 f. I replaced numerous underhood things before I found out heating the inside of the car would allow it to start. I found this video and performed the swap and its been running right since. Good luck.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIXmd8SCGzI
Replace the fuel pressure regulator. I took a really close look at mine. The fuel pressure was within spec, but at closer examination I found that it was leaking and also causing that erratic idle from 400-1500 rpms.
My 2000 had all the exact same problems as yours
Don't bother with the fuel pressure regulator. I changed it when I noticed the leak, but it never fixed the problem.
Sorry guys still stuck like you
lets keep working on this because it got cold again and now the car wont start. This is totally frustrating
How many of us that are having the same problem have a car starter? I kind of think it might have something to do with it because my starter also tends to screw up by turning off the car even after resetting the unit. It might be totally different but it a curious question
So far I have replaced the MAP sensor MAF sensor, checked for codes, fuel pressure regulator, cleaned the IAC. also cleaned the throttle body. Fuel pressure is also good. Gonna replace the coolant temperature sensor, but the weather has warmed up lately to -5 F so the car is acting okay right now.
sorry guys I meant -5 C
take your battery inside at night, worked for me. I also put a thick blanket around the battery cuz I got tired of taking it and out lol....get a more expensive battery. I had a cheap one that is why.

Take ur battery out and get it tested if ur battery is old then your vehical will have a very hard time turning over.
If its the igniton switch gm has a recall for those. should be able to call the dealer and have it replaced for free. i replaced mine with a junkyard one and then i got the paper in the mail after i junked the car.
I have the same problem and one simple solution that works for me is, go to Auto Zone and buy one of the Techron solution concentrated ($7.99 for 12 oz, buy one get one free as shown on Auto Zone in store ads), and put that in your near empty gas tank one whole bottle, fill the gas tank to full with 93 octain gas, take your car on the free way and drive for 1 hour. That Techron will clean up everything, your fuel injector and all the bad stuff in your car.
Please post your result after you guys try it out.
Good luck!!!!
Have any of you tried replacing your spark plugs and wires.
Okay, so it ISN'T the ignition coils or ignition control module on my car. Tried it and it didn't work though it DOES run much, much smoother. It looks like if it isn't the fuel pressure regulator (which I haven't replaced yet since a poster said it wasn't the prob.) then we're down to an electrical problem with maybe a bad fuse or something. Gonna go get some new box fuses this week and hopefully we'll see! :)
I changed th e fuel pressure regulator and checked all the fuses and still have the problem also. I spoke with a mechanic last week and he kinda indicated that it was problem in the computer module...not necessarily that the module was damaged or broken but that it may just have a setting that is off and needs to be recalibrated. Since it would have to be hooked up on a diagnostics machine it probably won't be a very cheap fix...they like charging a lot for computer junk.
Sorry ya'll, that's all I've got! :(
Yes, I think the last comment is for a different problem and I have no idea as to what the solution would be
I forgot to add that I have also replaced the intake gasket on the front side of the block. I'd heard some rumors that sometimes they crack and allow air in because they shrink in the cold and that messes with the air mix when you try to start...anyway, another part to add to the list of "Things that don't fix my car".

SOURCE: car won't start when it's cold
The ignition switch is bad. I had mine replaced. Saturn found 2 error codes that came up. You can also use a hair dryer I was told and warm up the switch. I hope this helped.
SOURCE: car won't start when it's cold
Depending on the type of car engine you have, any of these three causes of car start-up failure during ambient cold temperatures may apply to your situation:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Vehicle_Car_Zone_Cars_Trucks_Vans_Engine_System_Engine_Quits_When_Cold.htm
And here are the causes of cloud of smoke:
http://yourhandymanzone.com/Your_Handyman_Zone_How_To_Pages_Vehicle_Car_Zone_Cars_Trucks_Vans_Emission_System_Black_Smoke_Exhaust_Exits_Tailpipe.htm
Likely, your cause of smoke has to do with the air control or fuel regulator, as either of these is somewhat responsible for your initial start-up difficulties.
Hope this helps! Brad

I am having the same problem. When it is cold my 2000 alero floods when I try to start it. If I press the pedal to the floor it starts to backfire. I warm up the engine with a heater and then it starts. Then after that it sidle sr=tarts to surge from 400-1500 rpms... Cant figure it out.
my 2002 kai will not start when cold out i put lots of new parts in it what can it be
Hi
I also have a 2000 Alero with the same problem, new battery, new MAP sensor and new MAF, did not work. It also pulls no codes. -25 celcius even if it is plugged in the car still floods. Put pedal to the floor and it backfires. Sometimes I get lucky and i push the gas about 5 - 10% and it starts. I agree once it gets heated in a garage it starts, but then the engine surges from 400 - 1200 RPMs
HELP
I have the same problem. I just bought the car....and have had nothing but problems with it. First it was missing so we had a tune up done on it and had the coils changed, then that wasn't it, so now Monday I'll be taking it back to the gararge to get the fuel injector changed. But when it's cold outside, it will turn over but won't start. But when it warms up it will start finally. So mostly early in the morning or late at night when its really cold right now, it won't start.
So u think I should have the fuel pressure regulator changed? How much will that cost? The battery looks new....but I guess I can have it tested anyways. I guess you never know, right?
I've had the EXACT same problem as the first few above posters...and think I have a possible solution. My 2000 Alero won't start in cold temps BUT if you heat it up or the outside temp warms up it'll start. I started trying to warm up selective places with my wife's hair dryer and have isolated a spot where it makes the difference. The spark plug plate.
So far, I've checked all the major sensors AND replaced both temp sensors, checked the gas pressure reg., replaced the spark plugs...NONE OF IT HAS WORKED!
On our model, the spark plugs connect to a plate instead of connecting to traditional wire harnesses. Inside the plate is the ignition control module (the small silver box that's about 2"X4"X1/2")...when I heat it up, the car STARTS! I'm not swearing by this as the solution but I'm gonna go for parts tomorrow to fix it. Autozone lists a replacement for around 140.00...I don't like that number so I'm gonna try a salvage yard. GOOD LUCK!!!
I am facing the same exact thing. I do not have an automatic start as one of the earlier posts. I just had the starter and a the thermostat housing replaced about a month before this started messing up. Brand new battery is on there also. its a 2001 Ford Focus.
