Can a voltage regulator/rectifier if not working properly blow the main fuse. I have a 2002 v-star 1100. I was riding when all of a sudden the bike died on me. I lost all power no light, turn signals, nothing but the odometer reading. I checked the battery and found it completely dried and steaming hot. I checked the fuses and only found the ignition fuse popped. I replaced the fuse and purchased a new battery. I started the bike but had a hard time keeping it on. It only stayed on with the bike at full choke. When the bike was on I noticed the light still didn?t work. I turn the bike off after 2 minutes of running and notice the battery was unusually warm and heard the battery bubbling a little. I purchased a new regulator. But before I install it I was wondering if the light not turning on is a result from blowing a main fuse. Thanks any help will be great SFC Guzman

Symptoms:
Lights flickering at times and/or battery gets hot to the touch

Problem:
Reglator/Rectifier

When the regulator dies, it allows as much as 19 volts to appear across the battery. This is not good. It will cook the battery and the battery could even explode. Fuse can not stand up to this!

My 2006 XDS 1100 Yamaha has blowed main fuse replaced starter relay bike ran about 15 minutes and blow the main fuse again,What could be causing this
The fact you said you rode it a little before the fuse blew makes me thing arcing at bad or loose connection, damage wire. May look for a spot where rubber insulation around wire is cut and may be arcing off metal somewhere. The diagram show battery + goes through main fuse to regulator and then ignition switch. I think I would start out checking wires and connection from battery to ignition and regulator.

Changed out regulator/rectifier and stator today both brand new new battery still dies or drains out during a short ride?? I'm lost now
You need to check the voltage on the battery while the engine is running. If it's less than 14volts, then the charging system isn't working at all, and that's how you test it. Don't just replace parts, test until you find what's bad. It may be as simple as a broken wire.

My 2007 yamaha 650 v-star classic suddenly quit running one day as i was riding, as if the key was shut off. now it won't start. what causes this?
this happened to my v-star 1100 it turned out to be the voltage regulator had a short and fried the battery and the loss of voltage from the battery caused the bike to quit.


another thing it could be is a short in the kill switch I've seen that happen on quite a few bikes over the years....good luck hope this helps.

How to test rectifier.
there are several ways to test a rectifer the quckest way to check if it is working properly is with a voltmeter first check ground resistance one lead to good known ground (battery neg.) the other to rectifer should be 1 ohm or less.Then hook meter to battery and start the bike and check and watch battery voltage should start to increase after a minute or so check at 2000 rpm again increase if it does not check stator if stator passes replace rectifier

oh yes..........
voltage regulator.... this unit also contains the rectifier which changes generator electricty from AC to DC for the battery. test the volt reg and it may be ok for the volts, but if the rectifier part is knackered, it will completely screw up every battery, they will not take AC !!!! every time I get a bike in for repair with volt reg. probs I always put in a new battery

The wires going to the voltage regulator keep burning up.
Common problem with poor quality parts, the regulator is the problem, the generator is working other wise you would not have fried the wiring, you answered your own question. someone telling porkies to get more money from unsuspecting client?
The regulator controls the voltage not the generator, the generator only supplys the voltage it cannot overcharge unless the regulator is not working properly, simple!

If you take a look at the parts microfiche (make sure this is your bike please), the voltage regulator and rectifier is a little under $70. Labor for installing it would probably be in the $200-300 dollar range at a dealer.

Have you checked the voltage while the bike is running? It could be that the lights are simply drawing more power than the charging system can put out. Put a voltmeter on the bike and start it. Rev engine to 2-4000 rpm (or just ride the bike if you can see the meter while riding). Check with extra lights off and extra lights on. If your voltage is 14+ while riding or reving the engine without the extra lights on I think your charging system is probably OK. If it is below 13 (again, without the extra lights on) I say the charging system is bad.
